Lot Essay

This vase would originally have formed part of a five-piece garniture, which were always popular in large European houses during the eighteenth century. For garnitures including very similar vases to the present lot, see A. du Boulay, Chinese Porcelain, London, 1973, pl.100; and another, in the G. L. Bevan Collection, illustrated by Edgar Gorer and J. F. Blacker, Chinese Porcelain and Hard Stones, London, 1911, vol.II, plate 201, where the authors write 'We see here how the Chinese painters, inspired by the magnificent effects given to them by the rose tints derived from gold chloride, aimed to make everything in rose, and these specimens show something of their best work'.
