A rare gold mounted lacquer snuff box
18th Century, Mount by Antoine Bénard (fl. 1766-1790) executed in Paris in 1787
Of rectangular shape with canted corners, the cover decorated in iroe takamakie, hiramakie and hirame with a man surrounded by three women picnicking on the grass by a blossoming bush during Hanami, the base decorated in iroe hiramakie, hirame and kirikane depicting a house by a shore and a man sailing, the side panels similarly decorated, the mount finely chased with scrolling clouds and Doric columns, the inside in silver gilt with impressed seal marks, lacquer with slight old wear
3½ x 1.1/8 x 2¼in. (8.8 x 2.8 x 5.7cm.)
