For a similar view of Golden Island by White (The Kin-Shan or Golden Island on the Yangtse - Tse - Kiang river) see Martyn Gregory Gallery, Catalogue 30 (1982), no. 167, and for the artist, who served in China from 1840 to 1845, see Martyn Gregory, Catalogue 18. A version of the present view by White was engraved by Thomas Allom for the frontispiece to the Rev. G.N. Wright's China, its Scenes (etc.), I, 1843. The subjects are taken from the British naval campaign which preceded the Nanking treaty signed in August 1842.
