We are grateful to Stephen Lloyd for suggesting that this drawing dates from the 1790s. It is possible that Cosway had the Labours of Hercules in mind when constructing the composition: the slaying of the Nemean lion or the beheading of the Lernaean Hydra. Alternatively, he may merely have wished to depict a hero in adversity.
