Lot Essay

Schomberg House, at 80-82 Pall Mall, formerly the residence of the Dukes of Schomberg, was the home of the artist Thomas Gainsborough from 1774 until his death in 1788. James Christie had sale rooms adjoining Schomberg House to the east. Gainsborough and Christie were well-acquainted, and Gainsborough is known to have been in regular attendance at the auction rooms. Gainsborough's portrait of Christie, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1778, attests to their working relationship.
