Lot Essay
Extending from Brompton Road to Pont Street, Beauchamp Place was until 1885 known as Grove Place, and was built on land formerly belonging to Hermitage House, one time country retreat of the singer Angelica Catalani (1780-1845). The old church of St. Columba's, Pont Street, can be seen in the distance. Built in 1883-4 to revive attendance at the Kirk, the Church of Scotland in London, it was destroyed by an incendiary bomb on 10 May 1941. The present church on that site was designed by Sir Edward Maufe and was constructed between 1950 and 1955.
Born in Dublin, Rose Barton is best known for her impressionistic depictions of London genre scenes and landscapes. She exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy in 1884, became an associate of the Old Watercolour Society in 1893, and became the first woman member of the Royal Society of Drawings in 1911, where she was to show over 70 works. Christie's London sold 30 of her watercolours from the collection of the Earl of Iveagh on 21 May 1984 (lots 133-142), when the contents of Elveden Hall, Thetford, were dispersed.
