FRANCIS DRAKE (1540?-1596)
Portrait of Sir Francis Drake, titled Franciscus Draek Noblissimus Eques Angliae An Aet Su[c 43]. [London: Jodocius Hondius?: n.d.]. Copper-engraved portrait (39.3 x 29.8cm).(Shaved to just within plate mark.) Mounted into a larger sheet. Second state.
The finest contemporary portrait of Drake, here aged 43, at the height of his power; the favour tied to his left sleeve indicating the royal patronage of Elizabeth. The portrait is three-quarter length, with Drake's left hand on a helmet, his right holding a baton. In the background a suspended globe to the left, with his arms to the right (his paternal arms, quartered with the newly conferred: sable, a fess wavy between two stars argent). George Vertue attributed the unpublished and unsigned engraving to Hondius, bought the unfinished plate from Drake's descendants, added to the background and published this second state. Hind agreed with Vertue's assessment, but speculated that it might be by Remigius Hogenberg. Hind. Engraving in England, p.159 and pl.92.
