A fine view of the capital of Bahia, a seaboard state north of Rio de Janeiro. Steinmann, a Swiss lithographer, was hired by the Brazilian Government in 1825 to work as its official lithographer. He worked in Rio de Janeiro at the Military Archives and continued to work on his own account after his contract with the Government ended. He returned to Europe in 1833 and published his album 'Souvenirs de Rio de Janeiro' between 1835 and 1839, including views after drawings by the author, Kretschmar and Duburne.
