CHRISTOVAL ACUNA (1597-?1676)

Relation de la riviere des Amazones traduite Par feu Mr de Gomberville. Paris: la veuve Lois Billane, 1682. 4 volumes, 12° (15.4 x 8.6cm). Folding facsimile map in vol.II, bookplate? mounted on A2r of vol.I. (Title of vol.II with neat repaired hole at inner blank margin, occasional browning, a few minor marginal paper-faults.) Late 19th-century French calf-backed boards, spine in six compartments with raised bands, green or red morocco lettering-pieces, three other compartments with single flower tool, the lowest compartment with the blocked arms of the Emperor of Brazil (light scuffing to extremities). Provenance: PEDRO II, EMPEROR OF BRAZIL (1825-1891, binding); John Batterson Stetson, Jr. (1884-1952, bookplate).

A CLASSIC ACCOUNT OF THE AMAZON WITH A POIGNANT PROVENANCE. Opinion is divided as to whether this is the first or second edition in French, primacy is generally given to Claude Barbin's edition of the same year, but Borba de Moraes disagrees. Volume one is entirely made up of an unsigned Dissertation on the Amazon, while Acuna's account occupies volumes II & III. Volume IV is the Journal du Voyage of Jean Grillet and Francois Bechamel, concerning Guyana. Pedro II succeded his father as Emperor of Brazil in 1831. Renowned for his scholarly tastes and love of learning, he reigned peacefully until exiled by the revolution of 1889. He died in Paris in 1891. Stetson was forced by bankruptcy to auction his library in 1934. Borba de Moraes I,p.12; cf. Palau 2484; cf. Sabin 151. (4)
