Wood left his native Liverpool for America in 1817, setting up as a painter in Boston before joining a scientific expedition to Chile in 1819. He remained in Chile until 1852 working in various capacities, primarily as artist and engineer. His art concentrated on the exploits of the Chilean navy in the years to Independence.
