UNITED STATES IMMIGRATION
[Joseph S. WILSON, commissioner]. Bericht des Commissionär des General-Landamtes, der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, fr das Jahr 1866. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1867. Bericht ... fr das Jahr 1867. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1868. 2 volumes, 8° (23 x 14cm.). Two folding maps by Theodore Franks and Joseph Gorlinski. (Very occasional browning, some tears at folds of maps without loss, a few short tears to title of 1866 report, one map detached, cancelled library stamp in 1867 volume). Original brown cloth, gilt-stamped title on front cover (very slight wear at extremities).
These annual reports of the General Land Office summarise the current survey of land in the public domain. Published in German by the Government Printing Office, they were instrumental in encouraging immigration to settle land, particularly in the mid-West and West. They contain statistical information on population and size of the States and territories, including some, such as Montana, which had not yet been accurately measured due to Indian difficulties in the west, and helpful hints, such as the correct pronunciation of Iowa. The large, detailed maps show the location of land offices, mineral wealth across America, proposed railroad lines. Issued immediately after the American Civil War, which had interrupted immigration, these reports for 1866 and 1867 provide a picture of a vigorous country intent on settling her interior and western territories and providing the information necessary to the foreign settler. The report for 1867 includes the new territory of Russian America (Alaska) having acquired it by treaty from Russia on 28 May of that year. (2)
