J.E.BRUTON, Charles LASCELLES and others (photographers). A small collection of carte-de-visite photographs, [circa 1870]. 23 albumen prints (circa 90 x 55mm.) on card mounts (circa 105 x 60mm.) captioned and numbered from 2-24 in ink on the verso in a single early manuscript hand, 11 with printed photographer's credit 'J.E.Bruton, photographer, Port Elizabeth, Cape of Good Hope', 2 by Charles Lascelles (1 of these with printed credit on verso 'Charles Lascelles, photographic gallery, Port Elizabeth, Cape of Good Hope'), 10 un-attributed. (Some general fading of the images, some light spotting or soiling to about half the images, one more heavily soiled).

The subjects include a portrait of Panda (or Mpande), King of the Zulus with his sub-chiefs. Mpande, the brother of Chaka and father of Cetawayo, died in October 1872. Other subjects include 15 ethnographic portraits, two views of a native kraal, a group of 'Fingo' women selling wood, a large gathering of Zulus being addressed by a missionary, a view of Victoria bridge spanning the river Umgeni, and two reproductions of paintings (by Thomas Baines and F.T.I'Ons). It is clear from the background props employed in the unattributed photographs that no more than four photographers are represented. (23)
