CAPTAIN EDWARD COOKE
A Voyage to the South Sea, and Round the World, Perform'd in the Years 1708, 1709, 1710, and 1711. London: H.M. for B.Lintot & R.Gosling, A.Bettesworth and W.Innys, 1711. 2 volumes, 8° (19 x 11.6cm.). 27 engraved maps and plates (6 folding, including a double-hemisphere world map), 3 folding letterpress tables, numerous woodcut illustrations, the majority land outlines. (The folding map of the Amazon torn, repaired and laid down, occasional offsetting of text onto plates.) Modern old style speckled calf gilt, spine with green and red morocco lettering pieces. Provenance: Tho: Tipping (inscriptions "Tho: Tipping Nov. 1711. of Yardley 31 Janry. 1739 Thursday").
FIRST EDITION, THUS INCLUDING THE SOURCE ACCOUNT OF THE PROTOTYPE FOR DEFOE'S ROBINSON CRUSOE. "Edward Cooke was second captain on board the Dutchess, the ship which accompanied the Duke, both under [Captain Woodes] Rogers, on a privateering voyage around the world. This edition was preceded by a one-volume work, hastily produced in the same year in order to beat Rogers' account to the market. The account by Rogers does not contain the translation of the Spanish manuscript describing the west coats from Tierra del Fuego to California, here profusely illustrated with woodcut outlines of the land, nor does it contain the large number of maps and plates of Cooke's narrative. It is generally accepted that Daniel Defoe used this account of Alexander Selkirk's years on Juan Fernández Island ... as it was the first book containing it." (Hill p.64). Borba de Moraes p.206; Hill p.64; Sabin 16303.
