Lot Essay

William Fowler was the famous architect and authority on Roman pavements. His acquaintance with Sir Joseph Banks may have encourage him to copy Cleveley's aquatints.

These watercolours follow the direction of Cleveley's aquatints published by J. Martyn, London, 1787-8 (for which see lot 107).
