Plates I and II are of Lyttleton (I from the harbour, II from behind the settlement looking out over the bay), plate IV River Courtenay issuing from Harewood forest is of a location approximately 30 miles north-west of Christchurch, possibly the Okuku River with Mount Thomas in the distance. The hand-colouring is probably later.

William (later Sir William) Fox published these views together with his The Six Colonies of New Zealand whilst visiting London on what was essentiallly a political mission as a representative of the settlers of the central district of New Zealand. His attempt to gain self-government for the settlers was unsuccessful and he returned to New Zealand where his involvment in politics continued. The first New
