THE FIRST FLEET.
Autograph letter signed by Newton Fowell, midshipman (afterwards 2nd Lieutenant), on HMS Sirius, to his father, John Fowell, Sirius, 10 May 1787, written three days before the First Fleet set sail on 13 May, informing his father that this was probably the last letter he would receive before the Fleet left ("Capt Philip came on board Sirius ('We have not yet been paid any Advance it will be paid today and supposed only two Months, the Men Murmur very much as most of them have 6 Months Pay due') and to his final plans, 3 pages, 4to, two filing holes in lower margin of each leaf, some rubbing along edge of address panel, occasional wear and splitting at folds, seal tear, stamped 'Gosport', collector's mark and manuscript cancellation.
HMS Sirius arrived at Botany Bay on 18 January 1788. A series of thirteen letters by Newton Fowell to his father were sold in London (Sotheby's, 15 December 1987, lot 252) and these give detailed reports on the voyage and the arrival of Sirius in the New South Wales. Newton Fowell (1768-90) was the son of John Fowell of Black Hall, North Huish, Devon. A fellow officer on Sirius described Fowell as "that very Deserving Young Man... Ord[ere]d to Act as Lieut[enan]t... I have Every Reason to Suppose him for the first Promotion... I think him by far the Most Deserving Young Man in the Ship". Fowell died on the Sirius on a supplying voyage to Batavia in 1790.
