ELISHA KENT KANE (1823-1857)

Title with 'medallion' vignette with legend "The Great Fair for the U.S. Sanitary Commission", steel-engraved portrait of Kane by T. Phillibrown after a daguerrotype by Matthew Brady, steel-engraved view of "Fern Rock... the residence of Dr.Kane:", 1p. text (verso blank), mounted specimen of moss "Dicranum Sp. Collected in the Arctic Regions by ... Kane. 1854". Sewn (using lilac ribbon) between original white glazed card covers, the upper cover embossed and printed in gold and lilac, lilac ribbon tie through foremargin.
VERY RARE AND IN EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION. Only three copies are listed amongst U.S. institutional holdings: the Dartmouth College copy with 6 mounted samples, and the American Philosophical Society and the New York Historical Society, each with a single sample. Kane's expedition of 1853-1855 reached 80° 30'N in their attempt to explore the channel between Greenland and Ellesmere Island. The expedition returned only after overcoming the greatest difficulties, and thanks to the help of the Eskimos. The text reproduces a letter from Kane to James explaining that due to these difficulties very few specimens of Cryptogamous plants were brought back.
