ROBERT FALCON SCOTT (1868-1912)
An engraved and manuscript commission, 2 January 1889, appointing Mr. Robert Falcon Scott a "Sub Lieutenant in Her Majesty's Fleet", 30.4 x 34.8cm., signed by Sir Anthony Hiley Hoskins (1828-1901), Sir Evan Macgregor (1842-1926) and Charles F. Hotham.
AN IMPORTANT DOCUMENT MARKING ONE OF THE LANDMARKS IN THE CAREER OF GREAT BRITAIN'S MOST FAMOUS ANTARCTIC EXPLORER. Scott's career in the navy began on board H.M.S. Britannia at Dartmouth in 1881, this was followed by a number of years at sea as midshipman on board various vessels (H.M.S. Boadicea, flagship of the Cape squadron, for two years; the brig Liberty; a year on board the Monarch; and nine months on board the Rover). He spent the winter of 1887-8 at the Royal Naval College at Greenwich, sitting his Lieutenancy exams in March 1888. The present commission followed, and he was instructed to join the cruiser H.M.S. Amphion, stationed near Vancouver.
