Lot Essay

On 1 March 1825 the East Indiaman Kent, carrying the officers and men of the 31st Regiment of Foot to the East, was set ablaze by a lamp. Fortunately the Cambria, a small 200-ton brig commanded by Captain William Cook, carrying a party of Cornish tin miners to Vera Cruz, hove into sight and with great gallantry rescued all but eighty-two members of the crew.
Another version by Buttersworth is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (BHC3819). The subject was also painted by William Daniel and Thomas Luny.
