Ibbetson, described by Benjamin West as 'the Berghem of England', was much inspired by the Lake District and particularly Ullswater. Previously a London-based artist who made numerous visits and tours to the country, Ibbetson appears to have been based largely in Westmorland from 1799 to 1804. A slightly larger version of this picture was sold in these Rooms on 14 July 1994, lot 45 (£40,000).
