A PAIR OF GILTWOOD CENTRE TABLES
One George II, the other of later date
With later moulded rectangular pèche marble top, the waved apron carved with acanthus and flowerheads and centred by confronting C-scrolls filled with rockwork, the sides centred by scallop-shells, on cabriole legs headed by acanthus and carved with rockwork and mille raies, on scroll feet, partially re-gilt, minor restorations;
the other, en suite and of slightly smaller size
The George II table: 30 in. (76 cm.) high; 39½ in. (100.25 cm.) wide; 26½ in. (67.5 cm.) deep
The later table: 30¼ in. (77 cm.) high; 36¾ in. (93.5 cm.) wide; 23¼ in. (59 cm.) deep (2)

Lot Essay

The tables' festooned scallop-shell cartouches are inspired by a Nicolas Pineau engraving of a console-table published in Batty Langley's Treasury of Designs, 1745, pl. CXLI.
