A CHINESE-EXPORT PADOUK OPEN ARMCHAIR
Mid-18th Century
The pierced rounded rectangular back with solid baluster splat, with shepherd's crook arms, above a padded rounded seat covered in associated gros and petit point needlework of birds and flowers in a cartouche with foliate border, on foliage headed X-shaped supports centred by a scallop shell, on pad feet, restorations

Lot Essay

There is a similar walnut chair with drop-in seat in the Untermyer Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and illustrated in J. Gloag and Y. Hackenbroch, English Furniture with Some Furniture of Other Countries in the Irwin Untermyer Collection, London, 1958, pl. 55.
This chair was part of an exceptional collection formed in the post war period and sold in these Rooms, 7 July 1988, lots 133-146.
The group included one of the Raynham commodes (lot 146), the Grimsthorpe chairs (lot 145), a pair of which were sold again anonymously, in these Rooms.
