A CHINESE-EXPORT BLACK AND GILT-JAPANNED CABINET ON A GEORGE II STAND
Late 18th early 19th Century
Decorated overall with chinoiserie scenes with pagodas, birds and figures in a riverscape, the hinged caddie top enclosing a nashiji lined interior, the lid lined with red velvet and centred by a mirror within an ivory frame, above a pair of doors enclosing fourteen drawers fronted with tortoiseshell panels within green and checked ivory and ebony mouldings, the reverse of the doors conformingly inlaid, the associated George II stand on cabriole legs headed by acanthus scrolls and ball and claw feet, six angle-brackets replaced, the stand adapted from a mahogany side table and later japanned, the fitted interior probably re-using elements from a 17th Century colonial cabinet
