Lot Essay

The antique form of these bergeres, with foliage-capped feet and scrolled arms rising from the flowered-tablets of the seat-rails, corresponds to the George IV style illustrated in Thomas King's The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1829 (E. Joy, Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1977, p. 216). The arms relate to those of a 'Roman' chair pattern issued in The London Chair-Makers and Carver's Book of Prices, 1808.

A related caned bergere was sold from the collection of the late Major Eustace Robb, Tew Park, Great Tew, Oxfordshire, Christie's house sale, 27-29 May 1987, lot 160.
