A PAIR OF REGENCY GILTWOOD AND BRONZED TWO-LIGHT WALL LIGHTS
Each with a ribbon-tied tasseled drapery backplate, the front with a semi-circular platform supporting an eagle with outspread wings holding swagged chains in its beak, the platform above upspringing foliage and three ribbon-tied scrolling branches, the outer pair with eagle-head terminals supporting turned ormolu drip-pans with urn-shaped nozzles, the branches centred by pattera, drilled for electricity, restorations

Lot Essay

A related pair of giltwood and ebonised sconces, which were probably supplied to Sir Gerard Vanneck (d.1791) for Heveningham Hall, Suffolk, was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 17 October 1997, lot 237. They hung in the Library which was designed by James Wyatt in the early 1780s (H.A. Tipping, English Homes, Period VI, Vol. I, 1926, pp. 371 and 373, pls. 567, 570 and 571 and C. Hussey, English Country Houses: Mid Georgian 1760-1800, 1955, pp. 174, 175, pl. 350-351a).
