Lot Essay

The battle depicted occurred during the War of Succession of 1742-1746 waged by Don Felipe (1720-1765), son of Philip V of Spain and son-in-law of Louis XV of France, between his French and Spanish troops and the Austrian and Sardinian armies. Don Felipe's ambitions were aroused when Charles VI, the Holy Roman Emperor, died in 1740 without an heir, stimulating Don Felipe to launch an attempt to revive ancient interests in the Holy Roman Empire. The treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748 ended the war and, as part of the treaty, Don Felipe gained control of the Duchy of Parma.
