Lot Essay

Berenson (loc. cit.) considers this to be by the same hand as the following lot. However, although the two panels here the same provenance and have compositional similarities, stylistic differences suggest that these must be by different hands. In particular, compare the pronounced contours of the face of Saint Paul and the sfumato of that of Saint Anthony Abbot.
