Safavid Herat, early 16th Century
Persian manuscript on gold-sprinkled buff paper, 240ff. with 13ll. of elegant black nasta'liq arranged in two gold-outlined columns, opening bifolio with gold and polychrome illuminated heading and later Safavid style genre scenes in margins in gouache heightened with gold, preceded by similarly illuminated shamsa bifolio and long introduction with similar headings, final folio with colophon signed Muhammad b. Mullah Mir al-Husayni, and seal of the library of Shah Abbas, very light staining and occasional restoration, in contemporary gold lacquer binding with flap with decoup/ae doublures
