Lot Essay

A remarkably similar painting was sold in these rooms 25 April 1997, lot 106. The ambassador appears to be the same though in different dress, and the vase of flowers and attendant figures are also present, although there the prince is a younger son of Fath 'Ali. The other picture lacks the smaller attendant of the ambassador, who here appears to be about to receive some gift from the Shah, though the object seems not to have been painted in.
See also note to that lot.
