Pen and wash on buff paper, a bearded man wearing a large turban sits in a rocky landscape with a pensive expression, inscribed dar ruz-i-du shanbeh shanzdahum shahr Rajab al murajjab 1035 ba maram rasid raqim kamineh Reza 'Abbasi, generally very good condition, mounted on card with fine gold illuminated borders with animals among foliage, the verso with a leaf of contemporary nasta'liq calligraphy by 'Imad al-Hasani within gold and floral clouds, slightly rubbed

Lot Essay

The artist produced several similar compositions of bearded sheikhs and elderly men seated thoughtfully in a landscape in the 1620s. Most striking in its comparison to the present lot is a portrait of a bearded sheikh with a distinctive nose dated 14 Dhu al-Hijja 1031 (21 October 1622) He appears again leaning on a cushion and dated 21 Jumada II 1035 (20 March 1626) in the Bibliotheque Nationale.
