Lot Essay

Depictions of fish arranged sequentially are often found in the lustre pottery of Fatimid Egypt. Another example is a vase in the Victoria and Albert Museum, where the fish are depicted horizontally, rather than vertivally as on our piece (see Lane, A.: Early Islamic Pottery, London, 1947, pl. 24).
