A QAJAR INSET AND ENAMELLED GOLD TURBAN ORNAMENT (JEGHEM)
PERSIA, 19TH CENTURY
Comprising a central raised oval domed section inset with clear stones surrounded by blue enamel details, surrounded by garnet inset gold floral sprays, the interstices pierced, a palmette pendant below and similar inset panel above, surmounted by five rising and curving radiating feather bands, each inset with graduated stones, a tourmaline inset rosette mounted on a spring above, the reverse of the central floral panels finely enamelled with gol-o bulbul designs on a gold ground, the surround with a variety of blue and pink flowerheads on a green enamel ground

Lot Essay

As well as being seen adorning turbans or the typical black hats which became popular for men in the middle of the 19th century, jewels of this type were also employed by ladies as part of their hair ornamentation (Falk, S.J.: Qaajr Paintings, London, 1972, nos.44 and 45).
