Lot Essay

Owing to an increase in the number of theological students admitted to Kelham Hall during the 1920s, a new chapel was planned to replace the entrance court originally designed by Sir Gilbert Scott.
The innovatory new design fell to Charles Clayton Thompson and was furnished with work from amongst others, the Artificer's Guild, Edward Spencer and Alexander Fisher. (The noted sculptor Sargent Jagger also contributed).
Fisher created a number of pieces including the altar cross and candlesticks and three sanctuary lamps in addition to 'the great candlesticks' which are recorded as a gift to the chapel from past students.
The cross and smaller candleholders were purchased by Southwell Cathedral when Kelham was sold in 1974.
