This lot is acompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Felix Marcilhac dated 27 January 1998.

Jacques Majorelle (1886-1952) only son of Louis Majorelle, master of the Art Nouveau Movement, was the painter that his father dreamed to be. He moved away from Nancy in 1917 due to ill-health and settled in Marrakech, Morocco, where he developed the African scenes for which he is famed. His paintings became very fashionable at the time of the Exposition Coloniale of 1931 in Paris which re-established the taste for African Art. At around the same time Joséphine Baker was 'The Queen of the Night' in Paris, and jazz was the only music to be heard. (see lot 115)
