Lot Essay

Silversmith and jeweller, Georg Adam Scheid was famous for his high quality enamelling. He executed designs by Koloman Moser before the Wiener Werkstätte was founded. This particular pill-box shows a mistletoe pattern, which 'use as an artistic ornament' was 'of very recent date and uncommonly fruitful', as the Journal der Goldschmiedekunst wrote in 1900, adding that 'the mistletoe sprig with its soft curves and the characteristic structure of its leaves cries out particularly for use as a motif for gold and silverwork...'.
