Sculptor and ceramist, Joseph Chéret studied under Carrier-Belleuse. He was long associated with the Sèvres factory of which he became an artistic director in 1887. His ceramics were regularly awarded prizes at Sèvres in the 1870s and 1880s. He became a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts in 1894. During his career he worked with several firms such as Christofle, Grobé, Baccarat. At the Exposition Universelle in 1889 he received a gold medal for his work with the Maison Fourdinois.
