George Hallifax (1725-1811), of Doncaster, was the fourth son of John Hallifax (1694-1750) of Barnsley. George was in Doncaster by 1750 where he became a clockmaker and later Mayor (N. Goodison, English Barometers, rev. ed., London, 1977, pp. 157 and 328). George's style was closely related to that of his father, famous for walnut barometers of this type, such as one sold anonymously Christie's London, 3 July 1997, lot 9.
