The two elements of earlier provenance were given in the 1951 catalogue but neither can be confirmed.
A number of 18th Century vases of this model are known, including a pair in the J. Paul Getty Museum (G. Wilson, Decorative Arts in the J. Paul Getty Museum, 1977, p. 78) and another pair in the Louvre from the Palais de Tuileries (C. Dreyfus, Mobilier et Objets d'Art du XVIIe et di XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1922, p. 69, no. 330).
A pair were in the Randon de Boisset sale in Paris in February 1777.
The pair illustrated above were sold by Sir John Murray Scott at Christie's London, 24 June 1913, lot 41, for £1,050. Apart from the present lot, these are the only recorded pair with white marble bases.
