Lot Essay

Commissioned in 1892 by the Prince of Wales, Britannia was one of the great racing yachts, particularly under King George V. Her famous victory over Shamrock at the Babbacombe Regatta in 1933 was to be her swansong as lighter yachts, particularly the J-class, began to outclass her. After the death of King George V, she was stripped of many of her fittings and scuttled off the Isle of White in 1936. The fittings were auctioned which is almost certainly how Lord Camrose came to own this section of her gangway door.
