Lot Essay

Sona was built in Camper & Nicholson's own yards at Southampton in 1922. A large steel-hulled vessel rigged as a schooner, she was registered at 519½ tons gross (247½ net) and measured 189 feet in length with a 27 foot beam. With twin screws driven by oil-fired engines by Vickers Petters of Ipswich, she was a powerful craft and much used by Lord Camrose in the years up to 1939. On the outbreak of the Second World War, she was purchased by the Admiralty as a wartime auxiliary and served in a variety of roles before being sunk during an air attack on Poole Harbour on 4th January 1942. The bomb was dropped straight down her funnel.
