Lot Essay

Richard Wilcock is recorded working for Gillows in Lancaster between 1806 and 1817 (C. Gilbert and G. Beard, eds., The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1986, p. 973).
Three pembroke tables of this model are listed in both the Memorandum and the Bill but the inventory mark on the drawer confirms that this table is the one supplied for the Dressing Room adjoining the South West Bedroom.
This pattern of pembroke-table relates to one in Gillows' General Sketch Book, 344 144, p. 11, and it is en suite with the Chamber writing-table (lot 366). This is turn relates to tables supplied in 1811 for Tatton Park, Cheshire (N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pp. 28, 30, 32 and 35, pl. 16b).
