Lot Essay

Vardy's bill for the account at Hackwood includes: 'To making a plan and Elevation of Mr Foxes Lodge at Holland House. Intended to be executed at Hackwood & to a plan and Elevation of Ld Albemarle's Lodge at Bagshore 1.1.0' (Hampshire Record Office). Henry Fox became the 1st Lord Holland and employed William Kent in 1748 to produce designs for his garden. The date in Roman numerals on the drawing suggests that the lodge was built in 1755 and so it is possible that Vardy was asked to copy the Lodge at Holland House for the Duke of Bolton's grounds at Hackwood.
