Lot Essay

The bookcase's flowered and lozenge-fretted glazing is featured in a 'Library Bookcase' pattern of 1753 engraved in Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Directory, 1754 (pl. LXIII); while the dentilled and acanthus-wrapped pediment relates to his 'Desk and Bookcase' pattern (pl.CVIII). The drawing may have been an inspiration to Vardy in his work on the furnishing of Hackwood.
