Lot Essay

The sitter was the daughter of Sir Alexander Fraser of Dotes, physician to King Charles II. She married, c. 1678, Charles Mordaunt, 1st Earl of Monmouth and 3rd Earl of Peterborough. Her husband was one of the major military figures in the reigns of William and Mary and commander-in-chief of the forces in Spain under Queen Anne.
