Lot Essay

The composition of this work is similar to elements of the picture The Duke of Marlborough directing his Troops before the Battle of Oudenarde, sold at Christie's, 17 November 1967, lot 97, in which the Duke, mounted on a grey charger, is seen directing his troops across the Scheldt, with the town visible on the far bank.
