Lot Essay

Like Jane (see lot 755), Charlotte was the daughter of Alexander Nasmyth and sister of Patrick. Frank Rutter wrote of this picture: 'A still greater rarity of British painting in Sir William Berry's collection is a delightful little landscape ... by Charlotte Nasmyth ... In style ... akin to that of her more famous brother; the trees are drawn with scrupulous care, while the general low tone of the landscape is well calculated to give brilliance to the sky' (Frank Rutter, loc. cit.).
