Although it is difficult to date precisely, this work was probably painted in c. 1818, around the time that Landseer was drawing the lions, a subject that particularly interested him, at the menageries of the Exeter 'Change and the Tower of London. Landseer's interest in these wild animals manifested itself through his life; in 1815, as a student, he borrowed drawings of a dissected lion from B.R. Haydon; his fascination is seen in the assistance provided to his brother, Thomas, for his Twenty Engravings of Lions, Tigers, Panthers and Leopards ..., published by 1823, and, at the end of his career, the celebrated bronze lions at the base of Nelson's column in Trafalgar Square. The present work therefore provides an insight into the interests and workings of the precocious young artist, either towards the end of, or shortly after his years at the Royal Academy schools.
