A Worcester (Chamberlain's) desk-set
Circa 1825, script mark to interior of one cover
Of shaped rectangular outline and with pierced scroll-moulded borders, with two sphinx handles, standing on four scroll feet, painted with cartouches of children at play and exotic birds in landscapes and in flight reserved on a deep-blue-ground enriched in gilding with foliage and scrolls, the upper surface with two trays for pens, two recesses for sanders and three detachable urn-shaped inkwells, two with covers (one inkwell cover lacking, one cover restored, sanders lacking, heads of both sphinxes broken off and restuck, hairline cracks to underside and wear to gilding)
