2 volumes, large 2° (478 x 368mm). Titles and text in English and French. 8 hand-coloured engraved titles, 5 engraved dedication leaves, 435 engraved plates, many hand-coloured, 32 engraved head- and tail-pieces, 40 intitals, all after Giuseppe Bracci, Giovanni Battista Nolli, Edmond Beaulieu and others. (Final folding plate in volume one creased and torn just affecting plate area, occasional old dampstaining.) Contemporary half-russia gilt (extremities rubbed, joints weak and slightly split, one corner worn).

This 'edition splendide et de Grande Luxe' (Cohen/de Ricci) was printed in 500 copies only. Recording the first collection of the English Ambassador to the court at Naples, Sir William Hamilton, this work had a most profound affect on the development of the neo-classical movement in both France and England. Hamilton employed as his agent D'Hancarville, and the collection was sold to the British Museum in 1772. Berlin Kat. 890; Blackmer 345; Cohen/de Ricci 474; cf.
