Lot Essay

The firm started by Michael Thonet in Vienna has been described as 'the father of furniture mass production in bentwood.'. Thonet boasted of making chairs without the use of glue and he was a dominant late 19th Century chairmaker across central Europe (C. Payne, 19th Century European Furniture, Woodbridge, 1981, pp. 332-3).
